Formula 1 is set to welcome a new manufacturer in 2026, as Audi has confirmed its entry into the sport as a power unit supplier and a factory works team. The German car giant, which has a rich history in motorsport, will team up with Sauber, the Swiss outfit that currently races under the Alfa Romeo name.
Audi announced its intention to enter F1 in 2022, following the introduction of new regulations that will promote electrification, sustainability and cost control. The company has been developing its hybrid engine technology in collaboration with Porsche, another brand under the Volkswagen Group that is also considering a F1 debut.
Audi plans to acquire a stake in the Sauber Group, which has been involved in F1 since 1993 and has a state-of-the-art facility in Hinwil, Switzerland. Sauber is currently in sixth place in the constructors' championship, with drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi. The team's title sponsorship deal with Alfa Romeo will expire at the end of 2022, paving the way for Audi to take over.
Audi will announce the team it will partner with by the end of 2022, but it is widely expected that it will be Sauber. The CEO of Audi's F1 project, Markus Duesmann, has named Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso as his "dream team" line up of drivers, but admitted that it will be difficult to lure them away from their current teams, Ferrari and Alpine respectively.
Audi's entry into F1 will mark its return to the pinnacle of motorsport, after it withdrew from the World Endurance Championship and Formula E in recent years. The company has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans 13 times, as well as multiple titles in the World Rally Championship, the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters and the Intercontinental Rally Challenge.
F1 fans and drivers have welcomed Audi's decision to join the sport, as it will bring more excitement and innovation to the grid. Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, said that Audi's entry is "great news" for F1, and that he hopes to see more manufacturers follow suit. Max Verstappen, the current championship leader, echoed Hamilton's sentiments, and said that he is looking forward to racing against Audi in the future.
Audi's entry into F1 is a bold and ambitious move, but also a logical and strategic one. The company has proven its excellence and expertise in various forms of motorsport, and now it is ready to take on the ultimate challenge of F1. With Sauber as its partner, Audi will have a solid foundation to build on, and a chance to make its mark in the sport. F1 fans can expect to see Audi on the grid in 2026, and witness a new era of racing.
